Parliament passed The Proclamation of 1763 which banned colonists from settling west of the Appalachian Mountains.
Why did Parliament pass the Proclamation?
1. To avoid conflict with Native Americans. ⚔️
Britain was already in debt following the French and Indian War. Conflict between settlers and Native American tribes would be expensive. 💰
The Proclamation served as a protective measure. Parliament couldn't afford to protect settlements with soldiers.
2. Reinforce mercantilism by keeping most colonists on the coast. 🗺️
Settlers in the west would be self-sufficient and wouldn't rely on trade with Britain.
The Proclamation was widely ignored by colonists who felt they deserved access to land they fought for.
